Let’s break it down, your skin is more than just what you see in the mirror. It’s your body’s biggest organ, and it’s working constantly to protect you, regulate temperature and keeping all the good stuff in and bad stuff out.

But when we understand how the skin actually works, suddenly your skincare plan? It starts to make a whole lot more sense.

The Skin Has 3 Main Layers:

1. Epidermis (The Surface Layer)

This is the part you see and feel, it’s responsible for your glow, your pigment (hello, melanin), and your barrier function (aka keeping moisture in and bacteria out).

It sheds dead skin cells naturally but sometimes needs a little help and that’s where treatments like chemical peels or at home exfoliants come in.

2. Dermis (The Middle Layer)

This is where the real magic happens. The dermis holds your collagen, elastin, and blood vessels, everything responsible for plumpness, bounce and that youthful, juicy skin.

When we do treatments like skin needling, we’re working to stimulate this layer to boost collagen production and reduce signs of ageing, scarring or pigmentation.

3. Hypodermis (The Base Layer)

Made of fat and connective tissue, this layer cushions your body and helps regulate temperature. It also gives your face its natural volume and as we age, this layer thins out (more on that in the ageing blog).

So… why does this matter?

Because the products and treatments we use should be targeted to the right layer of skin, based on what you actually need. No TikTok trend or viral serum will change that.

When I treat skin at Vissi Aesthetics, I look at the full picture, not just the surface. Every treatment or product has a purpose and we tailor it based on your skin's structure, your goals and what it actually needs.
