Meet Your Masseter Muscles: The Jaw Muscle You Didn’t Know Could Be Causing Your Headaches
If you’ve ever woken up with a headache, sore jaw or tight facial muscles, you might assume you slept in an awkward position or had a stressful day.
But there could be another explanation.
Meet your masseter muscles.
These powerful muscles sit at the angle of your jaw and are responsible for chewing. In fact, they are among the strongest muscles in the human body relative to their size.
While they play an important role in everyday activities like eating and speaking, they can also become overactive. This is where problems can begin.
What do the masseter muscles do?
Every time you chew, clench your teeth or move your jaw, your masseter muscles contract.
For many people, these muscles don’t switch off when they should.
Stress, anxiety and poor sleep can all contribute to unconscious jaw clenching and teeth grinding, also known as bruxism. Many people clench throughout the day while concentrating or continue doing it overnight without ever realising.
Signs your masseter muscles may be overactive
You may benefit from an assessment if you experience:
• Frequent headaches
• Jaw pain or tightness
• Neck and facial tension
• Teeth grinding
• Worn or chipped teeth
• Clicking or discomfort around the jaw joint
• A feeling of fatigue through the jaw after eating
Some patients are surprised to learn that these symptoms can all be linked to the same muscle.
Can the masseter muscles change the shape of your face?
Yes.
Just like exercising any other muscle in the body, repeated use can cause the masseter muscles to enlarge over time.
This can create a broader or more square appearance through the lower face, particularly in people who clench regularly.
It’s one of the reasons some people notice changes in their facial shape even when their weight hasn’t changed.
How can treatment help?
Treatment aims to reduce excessive muscle activity within the masseter muscles.
For suitable patients, this may help reduce jaw tension, headaches and the force generated during clenching or grinding.
As the muscles gradually relax, many patients also notice a softer appearance through the lower face.
Am I suitable?
Every patient is different.
During your consultation, we’ll discuss:
• Your symptoms
• Medical history
• Jaw function
• Treatment goals
• Whether treatment is appropriate for you
Not everyone with headaches has overactive masseter muscles, which is why a thorough assessment is always the first step and refferals to alternative treatments and/or providers may be more appropriate.
The Vissi approach
At Vissi Aesthetics, treatment is never about changing who you are.
